The Acer Predator 17 gave an overall great performance when tested. It runs all the games and complex programs perfectly. It also has some great features like its Frost Core and Dust Defender. There are, of course, some minuses. It’s on the heavy side weighing 9 pounds. The added weight, however, is well worth it. This laptop was made to perform rather than look pretty. That being said, it is priced just under $2,500. For some, this may be a deal breaker, but if you are an avid game player it may just be worth the money.
This gaming laptop is not a form of art. When looking at it at least. It is angular and bulky. It is not ugly, however. The design is more technical than anything. This was done to accommodate all the great features and strong hardware. They also added red LEDs perhaps to add strength in appearance to this beast. The keyboard is also very functional. The keys are well spaced and easy to use. An important feature when playing fast paced games. The touchpad (or trackpad) is sturdy and efficient. Again, no sleek, pretty, shiny keys. All function.
The added features and apps
This laptop comes with a number of Acer apps. This includes one for contacting the tech support. Another app can change the profile of activities that you are running. However, there are two added features that have to be mentioned.
The Dust Defender
This is a great app which, when activated, reverses the direction in which the fan spins. It speeds it up to full capacity. Any dust particles that have entered the computer are blow out instantly. This means that your laptop will perform better and for longer.
The Predator 17 Gaming Laptop is perhaps the only laptop with this ingenious feature. The Frost Core is a cartridge-like add-on that is found where the optical disc is normally located. Inside, it has additional cooling units and fans. By cooling the graphics card directly the motherboard, it can perform exceptionally for longer periods of time. Also, this prevention of overheating means that it will outlast many of its competitors. When tested, there was a noticeable difference in performance when used and removed. Although the actual temperature difference was not measured, the affect the Frost Core had on the gameplay was evident. A great addition to this gaming laptop.
A great gaming laptop naturally comes with a great processor. The Acer Predator 17 has the Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor. This quad-core Skylake processor runs at the speed of 2.60GHz, which is 0.70GHz faster than regular models. It can also reach the speed of 3.50GHz when pushed to its limits. The Predator 17 also has 32GB RAM for running all those great games. The graphics card, the Nvidia GTX 980M, and 512GB storage space add to the strength of this laptop. It also has great connectivity options. This includes four 3.0 USB ports, an SD-card slot, an HDMI 1.2 and one RJ45 ethernet card. It also has a port for the Thunderbolt 3, the newest way to connect.
Audio and Display
The integrated speakers are actually quite good for a laptop. This is due to the SoundPound subwoofer. They are laptop speakers, though, and cannot replace HIFI speakers. The display screen, unfortunately, leaves something to be desired. Not a lot, but something. It lacks the strength and performance of every other component of this great laptop. The Predator’s display is an average one. The 1920 x 1080p IPS LED display does not offer a depth or clarity that one would expect with the price. If you want a premium screen for this premium laptop, you can pay an extra $150 for the upgrade. The display works just fine, but it won’t wow you.
The high performance, coolers, and fans use up the battery fast. The battery life is just over 6 hours when idle. While actively playing games, the battery can maybe survive just below 5 hours. For those who travel rarely, this is a slight inconvenience. If, however, you make long trips often, this may be a problem for you. On the other hand, most gaming laptops share this relatively low battery life.
The Acer Predator 17 Gaming Laptop offers a great gaming experience. Upgrading to a better screen is a good idea, though. Everything else about this laptop makes it a great choice. It has a fast processor, a good graphics card, and plenty of RAM and storage. The speakers are perfect for its use, and the keyboard well thought through. Maybe not the prettiest belle at the ball, but definitely a laptop made with true gamers in mind.
